I’ve seen the light from thirty-thousand dawns Shine on the valleys of the turning Earth On wild sea coasts and neat suburban lawns, And all the wonder of Life’s death and birth. And did you think that you were in control, That soil and sea and coal and iron were yours, That progress was a project on a roll And guaranteed by scientific laws? Go to the crossroads. Seek the ancient path. Ask where the good way is and walk in it. For you were told it long ago By men of wisdom fired by love Of things above them, not below. Pride was below them, not above. In our times revolution called the tune, With tempting messages disguised as science: “Humanity will rule creation soon, And answer pious warning with defiance”. You grabbed the fuel to power the dream you had Of worlds and futures prophesied by nerds. If your ideas were damned as wrong or mad, You redefined the meaning of the words. You saw no reason to contain your waste, No limit to the output of the soil. Too late you noticed how the woes you faced Were brought about by burning coal and oil. Go to the crossroads. Seek the ancient path. Ask where the good way is and walk in it. You took new stock of rights and wrongs So troubles grew too much to weigh. The furnace you face now belongs To images of judgement day. Good comes from good as rainbows from the rain. No other good, however high you climb. Go to the crossroads now and look again Go now! There may be time, there may be time! |
